On July 17, Jacque, Cathy, Karen, and Christie delivered 40 quilts and 19 bags to Diana G. at Sungate Kids. This is one of our newest partner agencies, and they were thrilled to receive their first delivery of Firehouse Quilts.
SungateKids is committed to creating a community where children are safe and free from abuse. Children are referred by law enforcement or the Department of Human Services, and the organization serves families throughout Colorado's 18th Judicial District, including Arapahoe County.
During our visit, Diana gave us a tour of their beautiful facility and shared more about the services they provide. Each year, SungateKids conducts approximately 600 forensic interviews with children. They also offer individual and family counseling, as well as a nine-week support group for children who have experienced sexual abuse. At the end of the program, each child writes an encouraging message on their lap desk for the next child who will use it, creating a meaningful connection between children on similar journeys.

SungateKids also has a prevention education program that reaches more than 8,000 students each year. Children are taught about body safety and encouraged to trust their instincts and tell a trusted adult if they ever have that "uh-oh" feeling.
After receiving the quilts, Diana shared this heartfelt message:
"Just yesterday we had a 6-year-old whose eye caught the same one I did – the swimmers nestled in pink! – and who promptly wrapped herself in it and settled in. It seemed to me that in that moment, she understood, in a way that far exceeded her age, that she had a team of people standing shoulder to shoulder with her for the journey. Thank you, thank you for being a critical part of that team."
Messages like this remind us why we do what we do. We are excited to partner with SungateKids and look forward to providing comfort and hope to the children and families they serve for many years to come.
