In mid-January, Christie M and Barbara C delivered 24 quilts to Three Birds Alliance, an organization that provides pathways to healing and hope for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. Stephanie, the Volunteer Coordinator, was on hand to accept the donation. During our visit, we learned that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will be affected by domestic violence in their lifetime.
Three Birds Alliance, formerly known as Gateway Domestic Violence Services, operates two shelters. Their emergency shelter offers stays of up to 30 days and has six rooms with a total of 24 beds. Their extended stay facility is designed for stays of up to 90 days and includes five rooms with 14 beds.
While staying at either facility, women and children receive clothing, food, and supportive group programming. Residents prepare their own meals and participate in housekeeping chores. Children are offered both group and one-on-one activities, including games, reading, and help with educational activities. Three Birds Alliance is also the only shelter in the area that accepts pets.
Women have access to a housing navigator who helps them find appropriate housing for their families. After leaving the shelter, families continue to qualify for individual and group counseling, as well as court advocacy support.
Stephanie was excited to be able to give clients quilts that they can take with them when they leave the shelter. We look forward to sharing more about this worthy organization as we make future donations of child and twin-sized quilts.
